Ethereum Name Service (ENS) Available for the Energy Web
ENS lets you name things — addresses, keys, hashes, texts, and links — so you can refer to them in the ‘human-friendly’ name of your choice instead of what they really are: inhumanly long character strings. In other words, ENS allows you to put ‘ugly’ stuff in nicer packaging, thus boosting user experience and on-boarding with blockchain-based solutions. ENS is to decentralized web3 what the Domain Name System (DNS) is to traditional web2. And it’s now available on the EW Chain.

EW-DOS Tech Stack Gets Update, Including Middleware ‘Utility Services’ Layer
A set of complementary new papers shared recent evolutions of our core technology stack, the Energy Web Decentralized Operating System (EW-DOS). The updated EW-DOS stack now comprised three distinct layers: 1) The Trust layer, which makes EW-DOS open and reliable by providing consensus and immutability via the public Energy Web Chain (EW Chain); 2) The Utility layer or the “middleware” layer of the EW-DOS stack, which simplifies the experience of creating and using decentralized solutions; and 3) The Toolkit layer, which provides open-source templates to speed the development of applications for renewable energy markets, e-mobility programs, and DER market participation.

Technology Partnership with Nethermind to Support Long-term Network Stability and Further the Decentralization of the EW Chain
The Nethermind client, an enterprise-friendly core Ethereum client, will run the AuRa consensus mechanism, a leading approach for proof-of-authority (PoA) blockchains like the Energy Web Chain. Under the EW Chain’s PoA approach, only permissioned nodes operated by known energy-sector companies may create, sign, and finalize blocks in a round-robin style. The addition of the Nethermind client now gives validators a second option, alongside the Parity client that has served the Energy Web Chain since its launch in June 2019.

Partnering with Gnosis to Bring Enterprise-grade Multisig Digital Asset Management to the Global Energy Sector
A strategic partnership would offer Gnosis Safe services — a multisig enterprise solution for managing digital assets — on both the Volta test network and the Energy Web Chain production network. Gnosis originally deployed a multi-signature wallet in early 2017. Its successor, today’s Gnosis Safe, followed in late 2019 with improvements to the UX and security that make it a leading choice for enterprise users such as Consensys, ENS, and EthHub. Originally designed for Ethereum networks, Gnosis will tailor its solution to the Energy Web architecture, including the popular EW Origin digital infrastructure for renewable energy markets.

Collaboration with Ocean Protocol to Unlock IoT Energy Data, Boost Distributed Energy Resource Optimization
We announced a collaboration to build a bridge between the Energy Web Decentralized Operating System (EW-DOS) and Ocean’s data marketplaces. The bridge will allow customers, vendors, and grid operators to send power telemetry data from distributed energy resources (DERs) to Ocean, enabling data monetization for the users and Ocean marketplaces. Data scientists can run AI, ML, and analytics algorithms on this data, uncovering energy generation and consumption patterns that can inform better renewable energy grid integration and IoT device optimization for DERs.

R3 Joins Energy Web to Provide Enterprise-grade Settlement Services for the Energy Sector
Energy Web’s transformative partnership with R3 will unlock same-day settlement for devices, businesses, and customers. The solution will connect R3’s enterprise-grade blockchain platform, Corda, with the Energy Web stack. Corda enables businesses to transact directly and in strict privacy using smart contracts, reducing transaction and record-keeping costs and streamlining business operations, and provides proven integration with utilities’ legacy billing systems. In addition, the complexity of utility account net settlement in multi-layered markets can be drastically simplified, and risk profiles for energy-sector transactions can be greatly reduced.
